Assassin Snail

Assassin / Killer Snail (single)

The Assassin Snail (Clea helena), also known as the Snail Eating Snail, is a fascinating and functional addition to any freshwater aquarium. Renowned for its ability to control pest snail populations, the Assassin Snail is a natural and effective solution for maintaining a balanced and clean tank environment. With its distinctive yellow and black banded shell, this snail adds both beauty and utility to your aquarium.

Features

  • Effective Pest Control: Naturally preys on nuisance snails, helping to keep your aquarium clean and balanced.
  • Distinctive Appearance: Attractive yellow and black banded shell that adds visual interest to your tank.
  • Hardy Species: Adaptable and resilient, making it suitable for beginners and experienced aquarists alike.
  • Peaceful Nature: Safe to keep with most fish and other invertebrates, as it primarily targets other snails.
  • Low Maintenance: Requires minimal care, making it an easy addition to any freshwater setup.

Care Instructions

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended to provide ample space for foraging and hiding.
  • Water Conditions:
    • Temperature: 68°F to 82°F (20°C to 28°C)
    • pH: 6.5 to 7.5
    • Hardness: 5 to 15 dKH
  • Diet: While the primary diet consists of other snails, Assassin Snails will also consume uneaten fish food and detritus. Supplement their diet with sinking pellets or frozen foods if necessary.
  • Substrate: A soft, sandy substrate is ideal for burrowing and hunting.
  • Tank Setup: Provide plenty of hiding spots with plants, rocks, and driftwood. Avoid keeping them with very small or delicate snails you wish to keep alive.
  • Compatibility: Generally peaceful, but best kept with species that are not prone to being eaten, such as larger snails, shrimps, and most fish.
  • Breeding: Assassin Snails are relatively easy to breed in captivity. They lay single eggs in hard-to-see places, and the young snails will emerge after a few weeks.

Additional Tips

  • Monitor snail populations in your tank; too many pest snails can indicate overfeeding or poor maintenance.
  • Assassin Snails do not breed rapidly like some pest snails, so they are easier to manage in terms of population control.
  • Regular water changes and maintaining good water quality will keep your Assassin Snails healthy and active.
